Information retrieval with verbose natural language queries has been generating a lot of interest in recent years. The focus of many novel search applications has shifted from short keyword queries to verbose queries. Examples include question answering systems and dialogue systems, voice search on mobile devices, and entity search engines like Facebook's Graph Search or Google's Knowledge Graph. However, the performance of textbook information retrieval techniques for such verbose queries is not as good as that for their shorter counterparts. Thus, effective handling of verbose queries has become a critical factor for adoption of information retrieval techniques in this new breed of search applications. Over the past decade, the information retrieval community has deeply explored the problem of transforming natural language verbose queries using operations like reduction, weighting, expansion, reformulation and segmentation into more effective structural representations. Information Retrieval with Verbose Queries is the first monograph to provide a coherent and organized survey on this topic. It puts together the various research pieces of the puzzle, provides a comprehensive and structured overview of diverse proposed methods, and lists several application scenarios where effective verbose query processing can make a significant difference. * The establishment, training and combat actions of two armoured units SS Armour in Normandy presents the combat history of SS-Panzer-Regiment 12 and SS-Panzerjager-Abteilung 12 in the Battle for France from June to the end of August 1944 based on transcriptions of their original unit war diaries from the Military Historical Archive in Prague. Both armoured units belonged to the 12th SS-Panzer-Division `Hitlerjugend`. The SS-Panzer-Regiment 12 was fully-equipped with Panzer IV and Panther tanks. The main AFV of the SS-Panzerjager-Abteilung 12 was the Jagdpanzer IV L/48 tank-destroyer. The structure of the volume is partly source publication (documents of the SS-Panzer-Regiment 12) and partly study (the deployment of the SS-Panzerjager-Abteilung 12). The text was written and footnoted by the author based upon original wartime files in Prague that have remained almost unknown. The book starts with the story of the units' establishment and training in 1943/1944 including for example the shipments of equipment, order of battle and tactical numbers of the tanks. After this introduction, a daily chronology of the combat actions is described in great detail, from the 12th SS-Panzer-Division traveling to the Caen sector to the Operation Totalize and withdrawal to the Seine River. Documents from SS-Panzer-Regiment 12 presented in the book include the following: combat reports, list of knocked-out enemy tanks, German personnel and tank losses, combat orders, summary of acquired combat experiences and others. This is an impressive look at tactical-level events and command decisions, highlighting the German armoured combat tactics which were able to stop Montgomery's Army Group from breaking through the German line for two months near Caen. The study includes a number of detailed maps and excellent photos.
